Saatva offers a 365-night trial, a lifetime warranty, and free returns. But you may not want to take the brand up on its return offer: “Saatva feels like the kind of dream bed you oversleep on at a hotel or Airbnb and then immediately try to justify buying for your own home,” one of our testers says.
The DreamCloud Hybrid has your support needs covered with next-level pressure relief and design. It’s a primo pick for anyone who needs a little extra lumbar support.
Our Tester’s Take
If your back tends to protest against most traditional mattresses, you’ll want to check out the DreamCloud Hybrid. This hybrid mattress contains individually wrapped springs and several layers of foam for a firm yet forgiving resting spot. The memory foam layer contours to the body and provides pressure relief on the joints, while a denser foam layer provides extra structure. Testers loved that the mattress, with its high level of responsiveness, is easy to move around in, yet isn’t so responsive that the bed shakes when you shift. It also avoids that “sinking in” feeling, so it’s easy to get in and out of bed. Note that some reviewers say that the DreamCloud’s support can wane over time and may begin to sag in its center. Others say its edge support is lacking.
You shouldn’t judge a mattress by its cover, but in this case, you can—its mattress cover, that is. The DreamCloud is encased in a durable cashmere blend pillow top that does its name justice. It feels soft, luxurious, and durable, with a breathable weave that helps wick moisture and heat away. Our back-sleeping tester especially loved this mattress, but we think it’ll work for all sleeping positions.
The Plank Firm Luxe features a unique flippable design with two levels of firmness—one Firm and one Ultra-Firm. On both sides, the mattress’s blend of memory foam and individually wrapped springs won our testers over.
Our Tester’s Take
The mere fact that this mattress brand is called “Plank” may be enough to win over any firm mattress lover. Even better, the mattress is reversible, which means it’s possible to choose between two levels of firmness: Firm and Ultra-Firm. We found that the Firm level has a moderately dense feel, offset by its plush quilted top, while the Ultra-Firm side is one of the firmest bed surfaces we’ve tried. The mattress also feels breathable, which makes it a great pick for hot sleepers.
One of our favorite things about the Plank Luxe is its unwavering edge support. It’s so strong, in fact, that one of our testers says “I feel like I could tie my shoe on this bed comfortably.” Because experts typically recommend that back and stomach sleepers pick firm mattresses, the Plank Luxe may be especially valuable to people who sleep in those positions. It may be too firm for side sleepers, especially on its Ultra-Firm side.
The WinkBed Firmer is a hybrid mattress with sturdy yet responsive springs and a plush pillow top cover. This gives it unique pressure-relieving capabilities that work for various sleeping positions.
Our Tester’s Take
If you’re known to snooze in all positions through the night, consider the WinkBed Firmer. One of our testers says it has a distinctly “springy” feel, yet is still firm and supportive. This makes movement easy, letting you nestle into a comfy spot without disrupting your slumber. The edge support is superior to other mattresses, too, which means you don’t have to worry about the edges sagging or feeling like you’re on the verge of toppling off.
In addition to its support and springiness, the WinkBed’s hybrid design allows for excellent pressure relief. Pressure on the lumbar spine and upper back—no matter what pose you slide into at night—is reduced, as is your chances of dealing with back pain throughout the day. The bed also has a moisture-wicking Tencel cover to provide a cooling effect that’s ideal for sweaty sleepers.
Best Firm Mattress for Stomach Sleepers: Helix Dawn
The Helix Dawn has a firm feel bolstered by supportive foam and steel coils. According to Wulke, the ample support gives stomach sleepers the necessary spinal alignment for a sound night’s sleep.
Our Tester’s Take
The Dawn is one of Helix’s firmest mattresses with stainless steel springs and a mix of soft and durable foam. This offers ideal support for stomach sleepers, who, according to Wulke, need a firm mattress. Without enough support, stomach sleepers may find that the front part of their body sinks into the mattress.
The mattress’s “comfort” layers include an ergonomic foam topper (which feels like a latex cover), and cradling foam at the center to contour your body. It also has supportive layers made of a tougher foam base and reinforced edges to minimize motion transfer. In testing, we found that the mattress helped keep stomach sleepers’ hips elevated, which is key for maintaining proper positioning in the spine, as GQ previously reported. Testers also commented on how responsive and “bouncy” the Helix Dawn felt, which is helpful for changing positions at night, as well as getting out of bed.
The Nolah Evolution Firm’s hybrid design is a pitch-perfect seven-layer blend of coils and foam designed to offset pressure points. The coils respond to your movement and the foam layers help the mattress adjust to your body.
Our Tester’s Take
Like all great hybrid mattresses, the Nolah Evolution Firm feels bouncy (that’d be the innersprings), while also delivering body-contouring pressure relief from the brand’s proprietary AirFoam, a memory foam-like material. The Evolution mattress comes in three firmness levels—Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We tested the firmest level and think it lives up to its name. One tester noted that the mattress sinks a bit around the head and shoulders. However, it still felt firm yet forgiving for back, stomach, side, and combination sleepers.
