The Real-Life Diet of Peleton Instructor Cody Rigsby, Whose Philosophy Is ‘Protein Over Everything’

After work, I then usually go to workout and if I’ve packed them, I’ll have the Protein Bites or a protein shake with a piece of fruit, like a banana or some mixed berries. For lunch—I’ve been back and forth with a bunch of meal delivery services and I’ve landed on one that I like, so I usually eat one of the meals that I have that I’ve ordered. Then I’ll have another protein snack—either a FULFIL bar or Greek yogurt usually works for me—and then I’ll have a protein-carb situation at the end, either one of the meals that I ordered or I’ll order off of Uber Eats.

I’m on DoorDash all the time.

Nothing wrong with it, but it gets so fucking expensive. I’m spending so much money.

I have this dumb little hack. I don’t even know if you want to hear it.

No, please!

On DoorDash, you can pay with Venmo. So, if you have $30 in your Venmo wallet and the meal is $25, I’m like, that’s free. You know what I mean? No money is leaving my bank account.

That is correct. Sure. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Good thing you are not in the accounting department there at Condé Nast.

I guess this leads to an obvious question. Do you cook?

Listen, I enjoy cooking when I have the time, but most of the time I don’t. Our time is very valuable, especially [us] New Yorkers, so going to the grocery store, buying the things, prepping the food, cooking the food, cleaning the food. You’ve spent more time and I don’t think you’re saving that much money. Do you know what I’m saying?

I do. I think about this all the time.

Most of the time I’d rather just eat one of the meals that I ordered, but I also am someone who will cook for just survival or efficiency. I have things in the fridge. I’ve got a few steaks in there that I can just leave out for 15 minutes, put salt and pepper on it, and then put it in the Brava and cook it. It’s easy. I’ve got minute-rice bags in the cupboard that are easy to make. It’s just stuff that’s efficient. But, I don’t typically like to cook. Everybody else can do it better than I can.

I have that brain too. Anything that someone else makes taste better, even if I were to make it the exact same way.

The only caveat is sometimes when I order food, I’m hangry, and so if it is late in any capacity, I start to have a mental breakdown. It says it’ll be here in 20 minutes but it ends up taking an hour and I’m having a literal menty B about it, and it’s not their fault.

I do have a really bad sweet tooth. I always have. Typically I try to steer away from it, and either I’ll allow myself to have a scoop of ice cream from the freezer once in a while to satiate that, or an alternate that I use is the FULFIL protein bites. They say they taste like candy and they do, so it makes me feel like I’m having that sweet treat, but I’m getting the protein and not putting a ton of sugar into my body. I try to really not eat a lot of sugar, but I don’t know if I’m winning that battle. I do love a piece of fruit. I think the hard and fast rule is just to prioritize protein. Even if you’re going to eat a bag of chips, have protein with it. If you can centralize that into your diet, it’s going to be really helpful. You’ll be more satiated and you won’t binge on junk food as much.

Do you have any hard rules when it comes to diet or fitness? Is there anything that you’re like, no matter what, I will never do this?

I do not subscribe to the idea of absolutes. I’m not that rigid. But I do believe in the seasonality of certain things. Like alcohol for example. I did no alcohol whatsoever from September to December. I mean, I’m 37, so the older I get, I just find it really hard to process alcohol. Even if I’m having one or two drinks, I tend to feel it in the morning. It makes me groggy or less efficient, so I’m super aware of that. I like to take breaks from things and see how it works with my body. I think I’ve made an interesting relationship with alcohol where honestly, I don’t drink that much. I also did the same thing from January 1st to about last weekend. I didn’t drink alcohol, and honestly, me and my mom spent the day drinking yesterday, and it was fun because she likes that. It’s enjoyable!

The alcohol thing for me is all about sleep. I don’t sleep well at all even if I have two drinks.

I used to have a WHOOP fitness tracker. The thing that taught me the most was how important sleep was. I could just see the data when I would drink, how much it would affect my quality of sleep. Listen, I prioritize sleep over most things these days. I’m in bed watching TV by 8:00 or 9, and then I’m asleep by 10:00 or 11. Then I wake up naturally around—I was waking up early for a while, like 5:00 or 6:00, and now I’m anywhere from 6:00 to 7:00. I need even more sleep when it’s cold and dark.

I have one more question for you. What celebrity have you been most excited to see in one of your Peloton classes?

Well, the thing is, people take my class online, so I’m not always sure who’s taking my class. But I do specifically remember Cynthia Erivo. She’s a Peloton member. One time she was taking my class and tagged me. She’s on her Peloton bike at home, and behind her are her Tonys and Grammys and whatever awards she has. I was like, that’s such a flex.
