Amy Schumer Says Internet Trolls Diagnosed Her With Cushing Syndrome

I don’t know if Amy Schumer knew what Cushing syndrome was back in 2024, but she definitely didn’t know she had it until literal doctors on the internet started commenting on her face.

Speaking to Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy, Schumer explained that the journey to her diagnoses started about a year ago when, “the internet really came for me,” about her changing face shape. Schumer says she initially brushed off the comments (trolls will be trolls after all), until the professionals got involved. “Doctors were chiming in in the comments and they were, like, ‘No, no … something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy.’”

Eventually, Schumer—who had been getting steroid injections for her breast reduction and Cesarean section scars—realized that prolonged steroid use can cause Cushing syndrome. “So I was getting these steroid injections and so it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome—which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard.”

“Cushing syndrome happens when the body has too much of the hormone cortisol for a long time,” according to the Mayo Clinic. “Too much cortisol can cause some of the main symptoms of Cushing syndrome—a fatty hump between the shoulders, a rounded face, and pink or purple stretch marks on the skin.”

“I was feeling really down on myself before I started filming this movie,” Schumer told Cooper, referring to her upcoming Netflix comedy Kinda Pregnant. “I was, like, really having trouble figuring out how I was going to star in a movie while I had this going on.”

Amy Schumer has never been shy when it comes to sharing her medical history publicly. She’s talked about getting a hysterectomy to treat endometriosis; having the hair-pulling disorder trichotillomania; going through IVF treatments; and hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that causes severe vomiting and nausea all throughout a pregnancy. Hopefully, she’s doing better these days.
