Cillian Murphy Is Blond Now

The Irish actor Cillian Murphy has been taking a much-deserved break from red carpets following his big Academy Award win in March. After spending months in tuxedos and landing a major Versace campaign, the Oppenheimer star has enjoyed a relatively more relaxed summer and fall: filming the hotly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie and presumably listening to lots of the Dublin band Fontaines D.C.

Over the weekend, the Irish actor attended the London premiere of his new film Small Things Like These, a historical drama based on Irish author Claire Keegan’s lauded 2021 novel of the same name. He dressed casually, in an earth-toned ensemble that was a far cry from the Versace tuxedo we last saw him in at the Oscars. The look was still plenty luxurious, however—the pumpkin-spice-toned suede jacket, grayish-green polo neck knit top, black pleated trousers, and black patent Chelsea boots all hailed from the pricey Italian label Zegna.

In contrast to his dark brown hair in Oppenheimer, the actor also was sporting a great new silverish-blond cut—which, according to an Instagram post from his hair stylist Gareth Bromell, is the same look his Peaky Blinders character Tommy Shelby sports in the upcoming movie.

The loose-fitting jacket (with its crafty front pockets for Murphy to rest his hands inside) and silky polo sweater had a similar ease as Murphy’s best outfit from his Oppenheimer press tour last summer: the Saint Laurent suit he wore to the film’s London premiere, which featured a bolo-tied sheer shirt and a boxy pinstripe jacket. During that event in July 2023, the Oppenhimer cast and crew walked off the red carpet in solidarity with the 2023 SAG-AFTRA/WGA strike, which meant the Saint Laurent outfit would be the last we’d (professionally) see of Murphy until his Oscars campaign kicked off after the strike ended last November.

Murphy is still working with stylist Rose Forde, who outfitted him throughout the Oppenheimer run. Hopefully this means we’ll get to see more of him in these elevated but earthy ensembles, in which he thankfully still looks like himself—a difficult task for most Hollywood guys, especially the ones, like Murphy, who are not particularly fond of the limelight. Speaking to Vogue earlier this year, Forde said prioritizing the wearer over the clothes is something she tries to keep in mind “with all of my clients—even if it’s a real statement piece, they have to feel like themselves.”
