A contract buyout that currently exceeds $60 million might be enough to keep Mike Norvell at Florida State despite an almost unthinkable 1-9 start to the 2024 season. However, that doesn’t mean safety for his entire staff. Norvell began the process of shaking up the FSU football coaching staff on Sunday, when he fired both offensive coordinator Alex Atkins and defensive coordinator Adam Fuller along with receivers coach Ron Dugans. On Monday, it was announced that Randy Shannon will be the interim DC, while Norvell said the offense will be managed “collectively” by the coaching staff for the time being.
Shannon will have a chance to land the full-time gig, but Norvell will also look externally for defensive coordinators this offseason, while the FSU football offensive coordinator spot is up in the air going forward. Top Florida State defensive coordinator candidates
One name the staff has identified as a potential target for defensive coordinator is SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons. He spent the 2018 season as the linebackers coach at Memphis under Norvell, helping the Tigers to appearances in the AAC title game and the Birmingham Bowl. With coaching stops in the states of Texas, Virginia and Georgia, he knows the general ACC landscape and has recruiting ties that could pay off.
He’s done an extremely impressive job for SMU. The Mustangs rank second in the ACC in scoring defense this season (21.8 ppg) and fifth in total defense (341 ypg). SMU had one of the worst defenses in the nation in 2022, so the improvement has been impressive, and Symons deserves a lot of credit for helping navigate the move to a power conference.
