The Titanic disaster is a very tragic accident that happened on April 15, 1912, when captain Smith and his crew failed to avoid an iceberg on its maiden voyage, causing the ship to sink and lose many lives. This event became famous worldwide, so much that there are several movies about it – you probably have seen the movie Titanic with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

  1. The Titanic was built between 1909 and 1911 by a company called White Star Line
  2. It was 882ft in length and 175ft in height. She was the most luxurious ship of her time.
  3. There were over 2,200 people on board, and 900 of them were crew members. 
  4. There were three different classes on the Titanic: 
  5. First class, for the wealthiest people. It had a swimming pool, squash courts, barber shop, and a reading room.

  1. Second class consisted of cabins with two or four beds, outdoor promenade, relaxation room, library and dining room. 
  2. Third class consisted of cabins for up to 10 people, with a big dining room. However, 700 passengers had to share only two bathtubs!
  3. The Titanic used three coal-burning engines to keep moving, powered by 175 men who shoveled 600 tonnes of coal into the furnaces each day.
  4. The Titanic was intended to travel from Southampton, England, to New York City, USA, and stopped at destinations in France and Ireland before heading towards New York.
  5. 5 days after leaving Southampton on April 10, 1912, it collided with an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912.
  6. The Titanic carried over 2200 people, but there were only enough life boats for around 1200 of them. Over 1500 people died because of the sinking.
