One thing to consider before starting a finasteride treatment plan is that a small percentage of users will experience sexual side effects (decreased libido, difficulty getting erections) with the pills. In very rare cases, finasteride can cause more serious side effects, which is why it’s crucial to take into account your medical history and consult a healthcare professional beforehand. Still, this daily 1mg finasteride pill remains a pillar in Hims’ product assortment for good reason: It works.
Experts suggest using compounded minoxidil/finasteride/tadalafil options only after you’ve seen how oral finasteride impacts your sex drive. If it does, then a compounded version might be for you, or you might opt for a
he ED medication doesn’t cover up a larger issue or other health concerns.
Topical Finasteride
It’s also becoming increasingly popular to apply finasteride topically, rather than orally. Many brands will even provide compound topicals so that you can apply both minoxidil and finasteride together, once a day. Hims offers a topical compound spray and serum in addition to its oral meds, and while I’m a huge fan of oral minoxidil, I think the compound spray and serum from Hims is the true “gold standard,” since it provides the most benefits with the least amount of side effects.
Ketoconazole
There’s really no such thing as hair loss shampoo, but most dermatologists will tell you that dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole is one of the best ways to sneak hair-anchoring benefits into your shampoo protocol. In addition to controlling dandruff, it can also help inhibit the collection of DHT at the follicles, making it a terrific two-in-one ingredient.
That’s why I particularly love the topical compound from Hims, which combines minoxidil, finasteride, and ketoconazole (with a little added biotin as a treat) for a full-court press against follicle miniaturization. I’m throwing around the phrase “gold standard” a little too freely, but Hims keeps one-upping its offerings and raising its bar.
Gummies
Hims positions its biotin-dense supplements as a great way to grow hair thicker and faster. Yes, you might notice improved growth, but biotin alone won’t help you keep your hair. However, if you choose to incorporate this delicious little treat into your daily hair care routine, I say go for it—just don’t put too much stock in its “hair retention” claims. FWIW, there are a bunch of other great supplement options out there, such as Nutrafol, which include DHT-fighting ingredients like saw palmetto and ashwagandha (though they aren’t as deliciously chewable, cute, or squishy as these bear gummies from Hims).
Hims Hair Care: Review
Hims’ hair care lineup does a great job supporting your existing hair growth efforts, primarily by offering customers a shampoo and conditioner duo that helps add volume to fine, thinning, or limp hair, and another that visibly thickens each strand upon rinsing for a temporary boost of overall fullness. (The conditioner will be more important in the latter, in terms of coating the strands to provide that added fullness effect, which tends to fade away by day’s end.)
The brand also has a terrific detox shampoo which uses zinc pyrithone to balance any flaking or itching, and even if you don’t regularly experience dandruff, it’s a great periodic scalp “toner” to keep irritation at bay. Still, I wish they had a ketoconazole option for shampoo, since it would work so effectively in their hair loss lineup. Again, no shampoo will serve as your defense against hair loss, but ketoconazole is the one active dandruff-fighting ingredient that can help prevent DHT accumulation on the scalp.
Hair Dyes
Hims also offers hybrid hair dyes/conditioners, though they’re only available at retailers like Target as opposed to on Hims’ own website. You can choose from four shades for now: light brown, medium brown, dark brown, and black. Each will “blend” your lighter or gray hairs into a good middle-ground tone that masks any salt and pepper—and won’t leave you with a block-colored dye job. (Full disclosure: I have never tested these.)
More Offerings from Hims
Hims isn’t just a men’s grooming outpost. It has expanded into everything men’s health, from prescription medications and ED treatments (and mints!) for premature ejaculation and sexual health and well-being, to solutions for anxiety, stress, depression, poor sleep, weight loss, and other health conditions—even skin care. You can even get cold sore treatment options, and Hims also has a women’s counterpart (Hers) which provides a range of products targeting all these same key categories.
