Laura Harrier’s 2025 Met Gala look took inspiration from a simple waistcoat and trousers—two traditional menswear staples—and turned them on their head for an ethereal take on the night’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” But the outfit’s origin is just as interesting: It’s by Gap Studio.
Designed by Gap, Inc., creative director Zac Posen, who accompanied Harrier to the event, the two-piece ensemble makes the most of airy, exaggerated sleeves, an ultracinched waist, and some of the widest-leg pants we’ve ever seen. The result is Black dandyism by way of aristocracy—and the actor’s princess-like pose only adds to the effect.
Posen drew inspiration from family photographs of her father and grandfather in their Sunday finery, according to a press release. The eye-catching shape is a creative nod to Black dandyism, the focus of this year’s exhibition; it’s all about self-expression through tailoring, and this is a shining example. While the raw denim vest nods at workwear, it’s offset by silk satin trousers and a triple-layer pearl necklace. Fresh, radiant makeup by L’Oréal Paris finished the look, keeping the focus on those dramatic separates.
Given that the evening’s dress code was Tailored for You, the entire ensemble was custom-made for Harrier—you can’t buy it at Gap. But you can snag a more wearable version of the outfit right now; peep our finds below.
While you might have been hearing rumblings about wide-leg pants starting to go out of fashion—skinner styles are popping up on the runway—Harrier’s Met Gala outfit proves that they’re here to stay. For last year’s Met Gala, Posen designed Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s custom Gap Studio gown, which was sewn from denim and also referenced regal fashion. That’s quite a track record—and unfortunately, we have a bit of a wait before we can see what the brand does for next year’s festivities.
