Silly Clam art project with Hidden pearls

This silly art project is super fun and easy to make, kids love it, and it was so easy to set up. Making these clams really works kids fine motor skills when they are decorating their clams, especially if they are using markers to color the clam or glue and buttons which they have to carefully place on the small egg cartons. This clam art also will help teach patience with waiting for glue to dry, and you can teach kids about how pearls are made in the ocean with this art!

Pearls are created when an irritant, like sand, gets inside the shell of a clam. The clam protects its inner organs by creating a hard smooth material around the irritant so it doesn’t hurt the clam creating pearls! Clams are fascinating! With this project kids can learn about these awesome sea creatures and get creative! Now lets dive in and get creative with this fun art project!

Steps to make hidden pearl clam art

1: Cut and fold the egg cartons

First step to make clam art projects. Image of two connected egg cartons folded over.
First separate the egg cartons into pairs, then fold them over.

Take your egg cartons and cut them into pairs. It will be easier if you keep the pairs connected so that when you fold it over they stay together without any glue or tape. Once you have the egg cartons cut into pairs, fold them together so the open sides touch and it makes the shape of a clam.

2: Decorate the egg cartons

Then decorate it with markers and buttons!

Now, decorate the clam however you would like! You can add stripes, buttons, plants, gems or any other decorations you would like. There are lots of different types of clam so make them any color, any shape, and any size you want. Remember you can decorate the inside of the clam as well!

3: Add eyes and a pearl!

Then add the eyes and a pom-pom for the pearl!

The last part of this art project is to add eyes and a pearl! Place some googly eyes and use a pom-pom for the pearl. Pears are lots of different shapes, colors and sizes, sometimes clams will have multiple different pearls too. To make this activity more fun, you could also glue the clams shut so that the pearl is protected.

This was our clam art from summer camp! The kids loved making these and learning about these cool sea creatures. All of the kids gave their clam a name and a unique pearl for their clam for their friends and family to find when they got home! It was a blast making this art project and it was super easy to set up!

  3. Add eyes and a pearl to the egg carton. Glue on some googly eyes, and use a pom-pom for the pearl. Then you can also glue the clam shut to protect the pearl!
