Sloane Square Underground station, on the district and circle lines of the TFL underground system has the River Westbourne flowing above the station.
During the construction of the station – opened in December 1868 – the river was crossing the proposed site. It was decided to divert the river into a large pipe and suspend it above the station platforms/tracks.
The pipe is enclosed within a green culvert, still in place today – surviving bomb damage to the station during WWII.
The green culvert can be viewed above the exits/entrance at platform level.
