In 1994, a Walmart store and Sam’s Club store were built one on top of the other at the Crossgate Mall in Albany, New York.
But when the Sam’s Club closed its doors in 2008, Walmart decided to expanded its existing store into a Supercenter occupying both floors.
At 260,000 square feet, store 2152 is the largest Walmart store in the United States. Built into a hillside, each floor has a separate entrance and exit. Inside, the two floors are connected by elevators, escalators, and a shopping cart conveyor that allows shoppers to travel alongside their carts between floors.
The first floor is devoted to groceries and similar goods, while everything else is upstairs. Tourists and locals have sometimes referred to the store as “Walmall” or “Mallmart.”
